The Short Version Oval sapphire engagement rings are the fastest-growing engagement ring style of the 2020s — and for good reason. Mohs 9 hardness means the stone survives a lifetime of daily wear; the oval cut elongates the finger and looks 10% larger than a round of the same carat; and sapphire's color range (blue, teal, green, padparadscha, white) gives you a piece that doesn't look like everyone else's. Below: three one-of-a-kind oval sapphire engagement rings currently in our Astoria workshop, plus three additional sapphire pieces for cross-shopping. Each shown both as a clean studio shot and on the hand.

Why Oval Sapphire Engagement Rings Keep Winning

If you've spent any time looking at engagement rings in the last two years, you've probably noticed: oval cuts are everywhere, and sapphires are no longer the "alternative" stone — they're the headliner. There are reasons that go beyond trend.

The oval cut works. An oval-cut stone elongates the finger, sits flatter against the hand than a round, and reads about 10% larger than a round of equivalent carat weight. It catches light from a wider range of angles. It works with vintage settings and contemporary settings equally well.

Sapphire is built for daily wear. At Mohs 9 hardness, sapphire is the second-hardest gemstone after diamond. That means it doesn't scratch in normal life. You can wear it through dishes, the gym, gardening, anything short of taking a hammer to it. Diamonds are slightly harder, but sapphire is the threshold above which a stone is genuinely durable for a lifetime.

Color gives you flexibility diamond can't. Beyond the iconic deep blue, sapphires come in green, teal, white, pink, yellow, and the rare padparadscha (peach-pink). You can pick a stone that says something about the person wearing it without having to reach for a different gem family entirely.

And practically: sapphires cost meaningfully less per carat than diamonds of equivalent visual quality. A 2-carat oval sapphire engagement ring runs roughly 30–60% less than a 2-carat oval diamond engagement ring with comparable craftsmanship.

The Three Picks

Oval Sapphire Engagement Rings, In Stock Now

Each of these is one of a kind. Each is currently in our engagement rings collection. We've shown each ring two ways: a clean studio shot so you can see the metalwork and stone clearly, and an on-the-hand shot so you can see how it actually wears.

Pick №1 — The Vintage Statement

Vintage Oval Sapphire Engagement Ring
3.10tcw Natural Sapphire & Diamond, 14kt White Gold

3.10 tcw Natural Sapphire 14kt White Gold Vintage Setting

The piece for someone who wants the ring to look like it has a history before they even put it on. Center stone: a natural oval-cut sapphire with documented provenance, set in a 14kt white gold vintage-style mounting with diamond accents. The 3.10 total carat weight makes this read as a statement ring without crossing into "costume" territory.

Best for someone drawn to vintage engagement rings, Edwardian or Art Deco aesthetics, or who already wears antique-feeling jewelry. The elongated oval flatters longer fingers especially.

Pick №2 — The Classic Three-Stone

3-Stone Oval Sapphire Diamond Ring
with Diamond Accent Side Stones, 1.95tcw

1.95 tcw 3-Stone Pavé Accents 14kt White Gold

The classic three stone sapphire engagement ring setting — past, present, future — done with a deep blue oval sapphire flanked by two diamond accent stones plus pavé side details. Total carat weight is 1.95, which sits in the sweet spot for daily-wear engagement rings: substantial without being aggressive about it.

The three-stone setting does something the solitaire can't: the side stones make the center sapphire read larger, and add brilliance that bounces light back through the sapphire. If you want a ring that reads "engagement ring" at a glance — but in a stone she'll actually want to wear forever — this is the pick.

Pick №3 — The Green Sapphire Surprise

Green Sapphire Oval Engagement Ring
3-Stone Setting, 14kt Yellow Gold

Green Sapphire 3-Stone 14kt Yellow Gold Mohs 9

Most people don't know green sapphire engagement rings exist. That's part of the appeal. Green sapphire is the same Mohs 9 corundum as blue sapphire, just colored by trace iron rather than titanium — same hardness, same daily-wear durability, completely different visual personality. The oval green sapphire here sits in a three-stone setting with white accent stones, mounted in 14kt yellow gold (which warms the green beautifully).

Best for someone who wants a ring nobody else will have. Reads modern, organic, and a little mysterious. Pairs especially well with warm-toned wardrobes and existing yellow-gold jewelry.

From the Bench We've made more green sapphire engagement rings in the last 18 months than in the previous decade combined. The shift happened almost overnight — once one or two clients showed up with a Pinterest board full of green sapphires, the rest followed. If you want one, our advice: don't wait for the trend to peak. Untreated green sapphires of high color saturation are a finite supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an oval sapphire engagement ring?
A ring with an oval-cut sapphire as the center stone. The oval shape elongates the finger, makes the stone look about 10% larger than a round of the same weight, and pairs beautifully with vintage and three-stone settings.

Are oval sapphire engagement rings popular in 2026?
Yes — oval sapphires have grown faster than any other engagement ring style in the last three years. Better color story than diamonds, 30–60% lower price per carat, same Mohs 9 durability for daily wear.

What's the difference between natural and lab-grown sapphires?
Same chemical composition, same hardness, visually identical brilliance. Natural sapphires carry origin and provenance; lab-grown sapphires cost 50–70% less per carat. Both are equally durable.

How much does an oval sapphire engagement ring cost?
At Treasured & Co., approximately $1,800 for smaller lab-created pieces to $8,000+ for vintage natural sapphires with substantial diamond accents. The 6 rings featured here span that range.

Is a sapphire a good engagement ring stone?
Yes. Mohs 9 hardness handles daily wear; color flexibility (blue, teal, green, white, pink, yellow) gives design options diamond can't match. Princess Diana's iconic sapphire engagement ring (now Princess Catherine's) was an 18ct oval blue sapphire — the most-photographed engagement ring of the modern era.

What does a 3-stone sapphire engagement ring symbolize?
Three-stone rings traditionally represent past, present, and future. With a sapphire center, you also get the historical symbolism of sapphire (wisdom, loyalty, faithfulness). The side stones also make the center stone read larger.

How do I size an engagement ring without giving it away?
Borrow a ring she already wears on her ring finger. Trace the inside on paper. Bring the tracing in. Most women's ring sizes are between 5 and 7. Every Treasured & Co. ring includes one free resize within 60 days.

Where are Treasured & Co. engagement rings made?
Every piece is handcrafted in our Astoria, New York workshop, where we've operated since 1989. Free U.S. shipping; in-person fittings by appointment at 30-06 Steinway St.
